We have had the amazing honor of following this program during the first year of Sophia’s life. In 2009 I began speaking to Dr. Kaspar about this very promising program. We poured over the research and saw that this program had the best Pre-Clinical data ever seen for SMA. In 2009 we made the commitment to Dr Kaspar that we would see this program fully funded to the clinic. Last year we donated $250,000 to the Kaspar Lab’s to keep this program on pace and on target. These funds were used to create the Gene that will be used throughout the trial. Although $250,000 is a nice start we knew that to raise the funds necessary to see this program make it to human clinical trials it would require a collaborative effort. This program has the potential of being the “First” of many things. It is already the first to rescue the animal model of the most severe form of the disease. We are trying to make it the “First” new therapy to reach Human Clinical trials with a budget of $2,000,000. This program will be a case study on how to move a worthy program from the labs to the clinic in a timely, efficient and effective manner. This program will provide a blue-print for future clinical trials. We knew that armed with the knowledge, many SMA families would see the potential this program has for our community. We are honored and humbled by the amazing people and families that have signed on to “The 200 Commitments”. So far as a united effort there are 30 commitments that have been made, we have decided to round that number to 50. The Sophia’s Cure Foundation is currently putting together a $100,000 grant towards this program. All of the money from our donors prior to the establishment of “The 200 Commitments for SMA” has helped us reach this amazing total. Thank you all who have signed on so far, your efforts are nothing short of heroic. Miracles do Happen…………. and together we are making one!
